All creatures have a fear of
violence
All living things fear death
Every living creature appreciates
his own life
When one is confronted with
violence he should imagine that the
situation is the same as everyone else.
Good morning the juries and the happy audience
Namo Buddhaya
It is Good
karma for us that we can gather in this place without any trouble. I'm here to deliver a bit of
what has been delivered by the Buddha about radicalism in the name of religion.
. Indonesia
is a multicultural, multi-ethnic, multi-religious society where there are many
differences. Allowing a number of intersections can sometimes cause big
problems. One of them is
radicalism in the name of religion. This is a problem which we have often heard from the news in various
media these days.
Radicalism
is understood as a stream which wants a change on social and political reform
by means of dramatic force .However, in
this case changes or updates to the basis of religion or beliefs held by
anyone.
Radicalism
usually leads to violence, as do many examples of community organizations in
particular. They order the food stalls, discos to close their business by
violence on the grounds that stalls or
discotheques are doing activities that do not fit the teachings of their religion. Then there wis a case in the
national monument when the declaration of religious freedom forum was attacked
by members of a community organization.
Adherents
of radicalism assume that those who
oppose it will have trouble both in the present and in the future. It then
becomes a dogma which is then indoctrinated to others to become followers.
In Buddhism,
radicalism will hinder one's inner progress. Because radicalism is one of
ditthiupadana ( attachment to incorrect and evil view). Since it is clear that
people with radicalism are
the people who have bad morality. This is
certainly contrary to what has been taught by the Buddha on love for all
beings.
In general
radicalism is caused by several ideas, namely;
1. The
emergence of the view that one of the religious teachings adopts mis interpretation of the content of the
scriptures.
2. Insufficient well-being
It is understandable why it is
easy to indoctrinate people especially those who are less fortunate. When they
are promised to become wealthy if they follow this doctrine , they will do it
blindly without thinking rationally.
3. Vengeance
When one individual or of a group
or community organization has a problem with other community organizations
especially a different religion
they will use the occasion to defend themselves under the name of religion.
This will cause conflicts with
religious motives.
4. The lack
of agreement on policy, especially harms
religion. Obviously it will trigger groups or community organizations to do
violence if the policy is not revoked or corrected. At the moment the groups or civil society organizations in
Indonesia are rarely willing to negotiate. Although no one expects to, when if in the end no
agreement is achieved, it is possible it will end in violence.
In
Culaviyuha Sutta (little sermon about the cause of the dispute) and Mahaviyuha
Sutta (The Sermon on the main causes of violence and strife) the buddha stated
that the main cause of violence is the differences in opinion. It is even worse
now because of the strong lust attachment. Then the advent of ego in a person
feels that his view or understanding is the most correct. Because of the
interaction with others , people are forced to defend their beliefs in any way,
including by force.
By increasing
tolerance towards religious fellows,
radicalism will erode slowly. In addition, the dialogue with other faiths will
also tackle radicalism. Now there is Religious Freedom Forum in Indonesia as a
platform for religious dialogue in Indonesia to exchange opinions.
In Upali
Sutta in the Majjhima Nikaya, Upali as a follower of the teachings of Nigantha
Nataputta was sent by his master to beat the Buddha in a debate. But finally,
Upali admitted the Buddha’s teachings as
well ad respected others’ faiths. Here Upali dis not have a sense of
revenge for having been defeated by the Buddha but he regarded it as rewarding
and respect for the Buddha's teachings and others’ teachings. We should imitate
what Upali had done, that we must always realize that the row will only hinder
our ownprogress and add bad karma.
Religious
pluralism is very important,as we know that Indonesia has many religions, many
sects. Religious pluralism is a world view concept that a person's religion is
not the only source of truth, but there are also
valuable truths in other religions which match the values in
his religion or may even be significantly better. When all faiths in this
country are aware of pluralism, it is likely to create comfortable worship.
Violence in the name of religion will nolonger exist, since freedom of religion
is also one aspect of the human rights. We should follow the Buddha who did not
attain enlightenment by violence but by radiating loving-kindness towards all
beings. In King Asoka’s Charter, one of which was named "Piyadassi"
meaning "The humanely", it contains a recommendation to the people to
live according to the Buddha Dharma. Our Lord Buddha theaces us, that you love one another, have mutual
respect and tolerance against all opinions and sects.
"Give respect to their own religion , never flout or
insult other religions.By doing so then they make their own religion develop,
and in addition they have also provided assistance to other religions. If they do otherwise, it means they dig the grave
for their own religion, at the same time, they do harm to other religions.
Those who respect their
own religion , but insult other religions , thinking that to do such things is
doing something good to obey the religious affiliation, will actually have the opposite effect, it will strike their own
religion "
Asoka Charter
The role of
religious leaders is also important in creating a forgiveness and loving people
of other religious followers. In this way, radicalism can be overcome. But it
would be even better if we control our own thoughts, words and deeds
So, let us
keep the religious harmony in order to create a conducive atmosphere. By keeping
ourselves in comfortable worship we will have no intention to disturb other
parties. We show that Buddhism is not a religion of violence, radicality.
In other
words, let us create a fully self-forgiving and loving kindness towards others.
We maintain religious harmony in order to create a conducive atmosphere. By
implementing the Buddha Dhamma we play our role in keeping a peaceful world’We
live in harmony among people of different religions by acknowledging that they,
like us too, hate being disturbed and harmed.Lets prove others that Buddhism
is a religion of loving kindness .
Sabbe satta bhavantu sukhitatta.
May all beings
be happy ...
